Crime Lab Manager Resigns: Can any test be trusted?
Wednesday, 01 August 2007

The former manager of the Washington State Patrol's toxicology laboratory, Ann Marie Gordon, resigned July 20 after the Washington State Patrol began investigating a tip that she did not check a solution required to properly calibrate breath test machines before signing sworn calibration certificate. This emphasizes that all of the state's tests must be calibrated and maintained and are subject to human error and human manipulation.  A honest mistake or a hidden agenda?  Breath tests must be calibrated quarterly.  Control runs with known calibration solutions must be run for all blood tests.  The keepers of these tests are not independent scientists.  They are police officers.  In Georgia, they are not required and typically refuse to speak with defense attorneys.  Can you trust a government whose slogan is "zero tolerance"? Sounds a lot like a "final solution."
