Taking Aspirin before drinking can increase your chance of a Georgia DUI

aspirinIf you take an Aspirin before you drink alcohol to avoid a hangover, you may wake up with another headache - an Atlanta DUI or a night in Jail.  Scientific research has uncovered a link between aspirin consumed before drinking and elevated blood alcohol levels.  In the study, doctors recruited five healthy men and gave them the equivalent of 1 to 2 glasses of wine depending on body weight one hour after a meal.  They measured their blood alcohol.  The next day the men consumed the same amount of alcohol but also took 1 gram of aspirin or the equivalend of two extra-strength tablets along with their meal.  The aspirin increased the men's blood alcohol level by 34 percent compared to the day before.  The blood alcohol levels also tended to rise more rapidly and remained higher longer with the aspirin consumption.  The study was reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 264 No. 18, pp. 2361-2450, November 14, 1990.  The likely cause is aspirin's affect on the activity of gastric alcohol dehydrogenase which is an enzyme that oxidizes alcohol.  Alcohol oxidation is a get component of the metabolization or elimination of alcohol from the body. Consuming aspirin after drinking should have no effect on blood alcohol levels as the alcohol oxidation has already occurred.  Other studies have indicated that this effect may be limited to men.  The study author noted that stomach acid drugs cimetidine or ranitidine may produce similar effects.
